    Abstract
Describes the Berdeen Art Gallery Image Database Project; a prototype project finaced by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) with the aim of creating a small image database containing a selection of works held in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and which aimed to identify ways in which the visual arts: paintings, etchings, engravings; could be organized and made accessible using low cost computer hardware and software. The aim was to take a typical art gallery collection and investigate the types of problems which were involved when considering digitizing the collection. Examines how the project created a sophisticated image database using minimum finacial outlay

    Abstract
Observes that image processing technologies are offering considerable potential for libraries and information centres to extend their databases by the inclusion of images such as photographs, paintings, monograph title pages and maps. Discusses problems and potential solutions in a structured fashion based on methods of subject indexing, classification, and information retrieval categories of thesauri (text and visual), hybrids, description language, and automatic content analysis, with state of the art examples
