    Abstract
The two-year pilot phase of the ELINOR (Electronic Library and INformation Online Retrieval) project at DeMontfort University Milton Keynes has recently been completed. The pilot has involved the digitizing of textbooks and other learning material associated with the first year of the degree in Business Information Systems, and enabling students to access these materials via a computer network. An important part of the work of the research team has been to assess the success or otherwise of the electronic library from the user point of view, based on both objective and subjective responses. The paper describes the main features of the user interface, detailing how users retrieve and then read required documents. The preliminary findings of a small-scale user study conducted during the pilot are outlined, together with methodologies used. The paper goes on to describe some of the problems encountered by the team in obtaing user feedback, and suggests reasons for these. It concludes by looking at ways in which the team plans to address these problems and to scale up the user study during the next phase of the project
