    Abstract
Since the publication in 1990 of the Rules for Archival Description, the Music Division of the National Library of Canada has revised its procedures for description. Emphasizes the importance of the preliminary processing of fonds in the overall description process since it provides essential information for final processing and helps staff establish a plan for the process. Discusses the 2 types of standardized finding aids produced by the Music Division: the catalogue of fonds and collections; and the numerical lists. States that the description of musical compositions must illustrate the stages in the creation of a work as well as any changes made. Includes several examples of description of musical archival documents
