    Abstract
Large chemical structure databases available through online hosts need special software for substructure searching. Describes a study which compares the systems of STN International (messenger) and DIALOG (S4) with respect to: architecture, functionality and performance. The 2 systems are very similar with respect to their search capabilities and many features are almost identical. The number of hits differ slightly due to the different treatment of some special chemical effects. The average search times are faster for the S4 system than for the Messenger system but the Messenger system can be adopted to large files by using the search engine technology. S4 is very well suited to the Beilstein and Gmelin databases, while Messenger provides more general capabilities
