    Abstract
The role of National Libraries and National Archives is to maintain a central point of access for publications and other documentary heritage. Books, newspapers and other printed material have been collected, cataloged, archived and presented to the scientific community for long periods, is some countries for centuries. Bibliographic and conservation methods for printed material are well-defined and reliable. Libraries were the central point for the dissemination of information and this information was bound to a physical medium. However, in the last decade electronic publications became more and more important for publishers, authors, scientists, students and the general public. A lot of scientific and cultural material is published electronically - in some cases parallel to printed publications, but more and more often exclusively online or off-line. Libraries took over the responsibility to disseminate these publications to their clients, although they have to cope with a lot of technical issues. National Libraries have to find ways to make sure that these electronic publications can be used now and in the future. Libraries and archives have to find models, policies, systems, and tools to fulfill their obligation. The emergence of electronic publications raises many questions of accessibility, authenticity, control, and preservation. The European Commission and several national libraries in Europe have initiated the project Nedlib (Networked European Deposit Library) to address these issues and especially questions of long term availability and long term preservation. This paper describes the tasks of Nedlib, the basic functional model for deposit archives (DAIS) and proposes strategies for keeping the electronic documents readable and usable respectively
