    Abstract
    Given the phenomena of growth and diversification which affect both text databases and their users, it is essential to reflect on the nature of textual information and its representation within the very particular framework of interactive retrieval systems. The latter aim to correlate two types of conceptual structures, that of the user and that of the text, by way of a third structure - the interface. A typology of levels, of representation is proposed (typographical, lexical, statistical, linguistic, semiotic, and pragmatic). These representations, obtained by means of a multiplicity of strategies (intra-sentence, intratextual, intertextual) applied to different units of information and interrelated, render the interaction between diverse users and the database more flexible and more adaptable

    Abstract
    Indexers differ in their judgement as to which terms reflect adequately the content of a document. Studies of interindexers' consistency identified several factors associated with low consistency, but failed to provide a comprehensive model of this phenomenon. Our research applies theories and methods from cognitive psychology to the study of indexing behavior. From a theoretical standpoint, indexing is considered as a problem solving situation. To access to the cognitive processes of indexers, 3 kinds of verbal reports are used. We will present results of an experiment in which 4 experienced indexers indexed the same documents. It will be shown that the 3 kinds of verbal reports provide complementary data on strategic behavior, and that it is of prime importance to consider the indexing task as an ill-defined problem, where the solution is partly defined by the indexer him(her)self

    This paper examines the prevalent contextual factors involved in the work of middle managers as they read and classify e-mail within two Canadian public administrations. Looking at e-mail through the lens of pragmatics and genre theory, the intent here is to devise a solution to alleviate issues associated with e-mail management practices. Resulting from this research, the E-mail Pragmatic Framework is presented. This framework takes into account prevailing individual, contextual and textual factors in the reading and classification of e-mail. As an alternative to speech act theory, a typology of e-mail pragmatic functions aiming to capture the expectations of middle managers as they interact with the e-mail genre is outlined.
