    Abstract
The National Railway Museum's photographic archive contains images of Britain's railway from 1866 to the present, with a distinct concentration on the period 1890 to the 1950s. Most of the images are held as negatives originating from a wide range of sources and constitutes one of the comprehensive and outstanding railway photographic archives in the world. The limited number of prints and the general feeling that the museum should be in the forefront of technological developments led to an investigation into the possibility of electronic imaging. A survey of imaging technologies led to the selection of high resolution digital imaging as the most appropriate technology as it was a stable medium at high quality. Describes the operation of the system, supplied by Primagraphics of Royston: a monochrome system which captures and stores images at 2500 times 3500 pixels and is capable of upgrading to full colour
