    Abstract
Briefly describes and reviews ISO 999:1996 'Information and documentation - Guidelines for the content, organization and presentation of indexes'. This is the 2nd edition of the 1975 international indexing standard 'Index of a publication', and in the UK it replaces British Standard 3700:1988 'Recommendations for preparing indexes to books, periodicals and other documents'. ISO 999 contains guidelines for the compilation and presentation of indexes and the examples are given as illustrations, not as prescriptions. Outlines the content of the standard and lists some of its recommendations on a few of the most debated technical points in index-making
