    Abstract
    Defines and discusses the concept of the multicultural library. Describes the history and current status of library services for cultural minorities. Discusses an international standard concerning guidelines for library service provision to multicultural communities. Describes the situation in the 1990s focusing on projects in libraries in Stuttgart, Nürnberg and Garching. Asks whether multicultural library work is a meaningless concept in that public libraries have failed to respond to the challenges presented. Discusses possible strategies suggesting that multicultural communities should not be singled out for specialist or different treatment
