    Abstract
Z39.50 is a widely discussed ANSI standard communication protocol that specifies the format of data that are exchanged when one computer is connected to another. Considers how the SIRSI corporation has addressed the question of physical connections, workstation capabilities and the organization and display of data for library automation. Provides a case study of the retrieval interface manager. Discusses the multiuser gateway; Internet navigator; researcher's access; intelligent interfaces; connectivity by the other vendor's OPACs; locally mounted databases; data displays and workstation options

    Abstract
SIRS Mandarin is a fully integrated library system that includes functionality for an OPAC, circulation, cataloging, inventory, statistical analysis, and report generation. Optional modules include acquisition, serials, and Z39.50 functionality for client and server. There are approximately 1.600 Mandarin installation in US libraries, about 92% of which are in school libraries. Presents the results of a questionnaire survey of 85 Mandarin users who were asked to rate the product. A selection of comments from the survey respondents cover topics such as ease of use for staff and students; cost; technical support; searching capabilities; and system flexibility
