    Abstract
The nature of authority control is defined, issues concerning it described, and their implications in connection with the use of large-scale bibliographic databases are analyzed. Some of these issues include the nature of standards, quality control and the differences involved in using centralized as opposed to decentralized databases. Economic considerations are deemed important, especially in view of planned linking of large-scale databases.
