- Bibliography formatting software (BFS) programs maintain files of bibliographic references from books, articles, etc. in a personal computer, and are equipped with a special 'manuscript formatting' function that enables a typescript to be formatted using word processing software, such as WordPerfect or Word, in such a way that citations can be inserted automatically into the finished text.
