    Abstract
Outlines the important trends in reference services in academic and public libraries over the past 117 years. Analyses the impact on reference work of the electronic revolution of the past decade, including online catalogues, end-user online searching, CD-ROM systems, and computer networks. Discusses the future of reference work in an age of increasing technology. Challenges facing reference librarians include: the continuing explosion of information technology; the need for high level skills; the need for building partnerships with key constituents; and the need to clarify philosophies. By examining the past and present with a critical eye and learning from both successes and failures, reference librarians can have the power to control their future
