    Abstract
The problem of the equivalence relationship in natural languages and in artificial documentary languages is discussed and it is shown that the use of this concept for synonyms should be avoided. A proposal is made to substitute this concept by similarity or tolerance relationship

    Abstract
Identifies the interest in questions of classified catalogues generated by the development of on-line catalogues, establishing a difference between 2 large areas: free access to information items in a systematic arrangement and expressing the contents of books by means of notational symbols in a classification system in a local catalogue. Examines the elements and structure of classification systems, the internationally important universal classifications, the procedures for book display and systematic processing in West German public libraries and exhibtion techniques in West German academic libraries. Covers universal and faceted classifications, as well as classification systems in on-line catalogues

    Abstract
Cologne Library School ran a project to construct a database for literature on content cataloguing and fringe disciplines. Software was the BISMAS 1.0 programme and is now the 1.5 version. The category scheme, indexes and retrieval possibilities are described. Retrieval is mainly free text, using the whole document description and all descriptive categories. BISMAS does not permit standard data file administration so a further database was provided ...

    Abstract
Reflects on the situation a few years ago in the field of subject access in libraries and evaluates the present situation in the light of recent developments. Discusses factors which characterise the situation in West Germany today. Examines the organisation of cooperative subject access during the course of which various relationships are explored, and the dovetailing of the network and local library operations, and the formation of local and on-line catalogues are discussed. Describes the relationship between formal and subject access; discusses cooperation in the allocation of catchwords, and cooperation in classified subject access; and addresses 2 forms of cooperative subject access

    Abstract
Investigates current thinking on the theory and application of index language. Explains their links with on-line retrieval systems and the need to go beyond a narrow library application, identifying 2 regularly occurring points of view: transferring traditional ideas about conventional keyword catalogues to post-coordinate on-line searches and redundant terminology about input and its replacement by pure subject searching. Explores the general subject literature, the theory of verbal documentation languages, syntactical indexing, the thesaurus principle and faceted classification structure

    Abstract
Since the introduction of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) and the arrival of online public catalogues, librarians might ask whether number building is essential or whether the same result could be achieved with Boolean operators. Descriptive categories could be prepared, with word or phrase inversion, as a retrieval system component. The role of syntactic indexing in online retrieval and consequences for service interface ...

    Abstract
Free text searching with keywords in a complete data store is not necessarily the best automatic retrieval method. There must be a proper classification of documents and concepts and the use of a proper classification system avoids problems of terminological deficiency. The dialogue search form makes the on-line catalogue a new information medium. A bibliographic unit must be created with as many search access points as possible, using verbal and classificatory search elements. Verbal search categories must include free text elements for individual search access requirements and a controlled vocabulary with syntactic connections. Classified data should consist of a universal classification system with clear structural notation for access and surface searching, together with several specialist subject classifications for differentiated documentation and retrieval. The universal classification needs no detailed subdivision: it serves mainly as a guide and entry to the detailed sub-systems

    Abstract
The test ran between Nov 95-Aug 96 in Cologne Fachhochschule fur Bibliothekswesen (College of Librarianship). The test basis was a database of 190,000 book titles published between 1990-95. MILOS II mechanized indexing methods proved helpful in avoiding or reducing numbers of unsatisfied/no result retrieval searches. Retrieval from mechanised indexing is 3 times more successful than from title keyword data. MILOS II also used a standardized semantic vocabulary. Mechanised indexing demands high quality software and output data

    Abstract
Librarians in West Germany have thesauri for subject cataloguing through the use of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) with the Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD - Standard Keyword Data File). There is controversy over the terminological properties of standard keyword data files, over whether SWD is universal and whether inductive vocabulary construction is successful here. Some RSWK chain components have no separate semantic isentity and, although SWD has several aids for definition precision, semantic structures are not fully expressed. At present cooperative cataloguing partners using RSWK should use SWD with it as a starting point and think about possible improvements. RSWK with SWD is at present unsuitable for personal computers
