    Abstract
The Mollie Thomson Memorial Lecture given to the Cataloguers' Section of the Australia Library and Information Association at the State Library of New South Wales, 18.10.89. Considers the success of developments in authority control in commercially available library housekeeping systems and what still needs to be achieved. Sets out the reasons why authority control is necessary and examnines the current situation under the folowing headings: making authority data available; authority control and the Australian Bibliographic Network; authority MARC output; the provision of clean data; the allowance of flexibility in varying Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH); providing relief from the time consuming manual work; the 'Superchange' enhancement; the 'Subdivision Mapping' enhancement; possible changes to the MARC authorities format; and the readiness of local systems to employ MARC authority data
