    Abstract
Michael Kaplan discusses his academic library career at Harvard University and Indiana University and his current position at Ex Libris. Topics include the following: individuals who have influenced his career, as well as those who have made significant contributions to technical services librarianship; the Program for Cooperative Cataloging; technical services workstations; library-vendor relations, and Kaplan's plans to use what he has learned as an academic librarian in his new role as a vendor; attempts to harness the World Wide Web; bibliographic control of aggregated databases; the problems of thousands of uncataloged items in the nation's libraries; and the future of cataloging and classification.

    Abstract
The ARL microform project, the ARL survey on microform sets, the establishment of an ALA Committee on Bibliographic Control of Microforms, OCLC's Major Microform Project, profile-matching, and programs and conferences on microforms are developments and activities during the 1980s that have resulted in major successes in the bibliographic control of microforms. Cooperative cataloging projects have been responsible for the additions of thousands of titles to the nation's databases. 3 such projects discussed in this article are Early English Books, 1641-1700 (WING STC), Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature, and Wright American Fiction

    Abstract
This paper analyzes the availability of books and other reading materials in Monroe County, Indiana, through 1850. It examines both unpublished and published primary sources as well as secondary sources to reveal that books and reading were part of life on the western frontier.

    Abstract
The number of languages in which libraries receive materials often presents challenges and difficulties for catalogers. Included in tlus volume are articles that deal with issues such as cataloging in languages in which library staffs have no expertise, authority work, descriptive and subject cataloging, classification, handiteration, backlogs, coopcralive and shared cataloging, and collection-level and minimal-level cadoging. Articles from academic, national, and public libraries as well as an article from the patron's viewpoint present different perspectives on these topics.

    Abstract
The Indiana University at Bloomington Libraries have been responsible for the cataloguing of 3 major microform sets. Describes many of the problems and difficulties encountered in these cataloguing projects.
