    Abstract
    Reports work undertaken by the German online host, DIMDI, to develop menu driven front end systems (expert systems) for online free text searching. DIMDI tested and found 2 different methods to be helpful to users. Firstly, relevant words and word patterns were determined by means of statistical analysis of the title field of a first search result, and displayed for selection. Secondly, if there is was thesaurus covering the requested topics on the host system, then the automatic use of this thesaurus for synonym and narrower term determination and the retransfer of all the terms found into the database in question was found to improve free text searches. Using prototypes of menu driven retrieval expert systems for BIOSIS PREVIEWS and SCISEARCH as examples, these 2 different approaches are presented and discussed in detail
