    Abstract
Since 2005, the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) has been adopted at the University Library in Frankfurt am Main for the new acquisitions of its special collections in biology. A pragmatic approach has been chosen to cope with the amount of literature, the required retrieval options, and the limited human resources. This concept is named BioDDC. The depth of indexing for the relevant areas is determined at a medium level, between abridged edition and standard DDC; number building is restricted; and, in respect of enhanced retrieval options, the individual components of numbers are kept separate in data models. BioDDC, as a concept, has been developed in consultation with the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB), ensuring compatibility with standard DDC. Aspects of practical implementation and further perspectives are depicted.
