    An account of the growth in the publication of multimedia encyclopedias, pricipally as multimedia CD-ROMs, focusing on 3 multimedia encyclopedias which dominate the market in the USA: Compton's interactive encyclopedia; Grolier multimedia encyclopedia and Microsoft Encarta multimedia encyclopedia. Also discusses recent electronic publications of the 2 most prominent US publishers of encyclopedias, Encyclopaedia Britannica and World Book, which hitherto have not published their products electronically
