    Abstract
    Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt das klassische Handbuch und elektronische Publikationen gegenüber, um darüber nachzudenken, was das traditionelle Handbuch an Funktionalität bereithält und wie diese auf ein elektronisches Medium (Computer und Bildschirm) übertragbar ist. Darüber hinaus wird erörtert, welche Funktionalität beim 'Lesen' von Handbüchern anders oder zusätzlich erreicht werden kann, wenn diese elektronische publiziert werden. Als Beispiel dient die SINIX-Dokumentation, die Siemens Nixdorf seinen Kunden ab sofort auch als Online-Dokumentation zur Verfügung stellt

    Abstract
    Technische Publikationen sind typischerweise komplex, umfangreich und langlebig. Erstellung, Pflege und Aufbereitung für unterschiedliche Benutzungsanforderungen verlangen ein effektives organisatorisches Konzept. Enge Zeit- und Budgetvorgaben erfordern ein hohes Maß an Automatisierung und Modularität im produktionsprozeß. Zur Erfüllung dieser Anforderungen im Rahmen einer Compound Document Processing Architecture ist die systemunabhängige Dokumentstruktur-Beschreibungssprache SGML (ISO 8879) ein erster wichtiger Baustein, weitere (z.B. DSSSL, SPDL) werden zur Zeit entwickelt
