Abstract

Bibliotheken und Bibliothekssysteme sind wesentliche Komponenten der kulturellen und intellektuellen Infrastruktur Europas. Wirkungsvoll können sie nur sein, wenn sie selbst über eine leistungsfähige Ausstattung und Organisation verfügen und wenn sie sich öffnen und koordinieren zu einem gemeinsamen europäischen Bibliotheksnetz mit einm universellen Zugriff zu den Informationsressourcen in Europa und darüber hinaus. Die Bibliotheksprogramme der EU haben die Bibliotheksförderung als Technologiepolitik in diese Richtung bewegt und damit den Dialog der Kulturen und den Austausch von Wissen gefördert

Abstract

Discusses issues relating to the access and preservation of electronic publications with special reference to the German National Library, Die Deutsche Bibliothek (DDB) which has designed its technological infrastructure specifically to meet the requirements of future networking. Considers the factors which must be taken into consideration in order for DDB to fulfil its responsibilities as an electronic library, including ensuring the long term availability of electronic publications; and establishing precise bibliographic search terms to make controlled access possible. Discusses the tasks and responsibilities of librarians in the new world of digital information and the importance of training and education of librarians. Libraries will remain indispensable for society only as long as they possess both a powerful information infrastructure and a well qualified and highly motivated staff

Abstract

Reports the involvement of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL), and its responsibility both to preserve and to provide access to books and information in an increasingly electronic world. Describes the 2 European Commission programmes, managed by a Forum of 8 national libraries, to serve these ends: CoBRA (Computer and Bibliographic Record Actions), which established 4 task groups to study: improved European bibliographic services; user needs for bibliographic products; networked record distribution and reuse; and promotion of data sharing; and a new programme called CoBRA PLus to continue the work of CoBRA and widen its focus to include collection based services, with emphasis on resource sharing, user needs and the use of communication networks. Notes the 2 main task groups, concerned with: metadata and bibliographic access, and electronic publications and digital resources, including legal deposit and storage. Notes briefly the 8 specific projects ranging from networking name authority files to the development of a new relationship between publishers and national bibliographic agencies for the control of electronic publications

Abstract

Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects
