    Abstract
Considers the factors involved in the planning and implementation of image information systems and image databases, including: its purpose, types of images; users and use; desired functions and features; and equipment and software. Notes the relatively new techniques for file conversion, disaster management and for access to and information retrieval of image content. While new mathematically oriented computerized systems might, in time, alleviate some costly human processing, text documentation will still be necessary to identify the image and to describe such elements as the historical context or the social environment in which the image was created

    Abstract
Symbolic indexing and retrieval for effective searches of digitised images still seem to be frontier areas. Explains some criteria and concepts for searches of digitised images, refers to commercial software currently available for handling image data bases with alphanumeric indexing, and lists areas for research.
