    The networked information environment has recently seen the emergence of a number of important new identifiers, some of which are relatively mature, and others that are still under development.     Abstract
    This article has three goals. It begins by reviewing the current state of the Internet as a data transport system and some of its emerging problems. Then it discusses 2 major research initiatives - Internet 2 and the Next Generation Internet (NGI) program - and some of the new network-level services that may first see substantial deployment in these new research testbeds. The article concludes with a few speculations about future changes to the Internet as a data transport system
