Abstract

The Internet now provides access to so much information that it is a problem to know what is available and how to navigate through it. The Wide Area Information Server (WAIS) is one project aiming to help solve the problem for the end user, by means of a graphical user inferface and the use of natural language for queries, which is then translated into the WAIS protocol. Abstract

The Internet refers to more than 50.000 backbone regional and local computer networks in more than 50 countries with an estimated user base of over 3 million people. Finding out who has what available on the Internet has become a real problem since the network is expanding so quickly. Describes Archie (the McGill School of Computer Science Archive Server Listing Service), a tool which was developed to help solve this problem. Also describes Gopher, a distributed networking and document delivery system designed to access electronic information and navigate the Internet
