- Abstract
- The study examines the place of publication element in the publisher statements of bibliographic records, reviews past cataloguing codes to determine whether a variation in place of publication constitutes justification for the creation of a new bibliographic record, and explores public services implications of creating a new bibliographic record. Suggests a change in policy that will more accurately reflect publishing practices, the significance of a separate bibliographic record, and cataloguing needs. Proposes 2 possible courses of action: cataloguing agencies might integrate these findings with current cataloguing practices; and the Library of Congress might wish to reexamine its cataloguing policies with regard to place of publication
