    Abstract
Purpose - The paper seeks to discuss the potential impact of managerialism on public libraries in the UK, and to suggest a potential methodology to investigate the reality of the situation based on previous works in the field. Design/methodology/approach - The article provides a reflective viewpoint. Findings - The paper proposes that managerialism in libraries and professional librarians are potentially bad fits, and that a broader understanding of the incompatibilities through proper research is necessary if a healthy future for the profession is to be ensured. Research limitations/implications - The paper proposes a methodology for investigating a potentially crucial impactor on professional librarianship. Originality/value - The paper discusses a topic that is much discussed in relation to other professional groupings, but is little discussed in terms of librarianship.
