Abstract: The concept of the universe of knowledge is traced from the nineteenth century in terms of its relationship to the purpose of LIS classification. Of two original purposes, book retrieval became predominant by the twentieth century and this has required, in turn, a complex rendering of the concept. Alternative purposes for LIS classification are afterward explored and speculations as to their effect on the concept of the universe of knowledge are provided
