A growing demand for digital documents is redefining the meaning of document delivery and repositioning the role it plays in libraries. Other trends helping to bring about these changes include the increasing sophistication of information technologies, new library philosophies and the prevalence of information 'pointers' such as bibliographic databases. Studies of delivery system usage have shown digital documents can meet a variety of research needs.
