    Abstract
The history of encyclopedias and wholly new forms of encyclopedias are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading the retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given.

    Abstract
Describes a hypertext-based system that integrates the bibliographic information of the library catalogue with user-defined knowledge structures, imports information at the user's command, and offers a dynamic personal information tool for active users. Describes the structure and the content of the data base, and shows how the system can be accommodated to different user groups or individual users.

    Abstract
An overview of levels and approaches in the evalution of knowledge-based systems is presented. There is a need for empirical studies using objective criteria in advance of completing the technical evaluation of such systems. A methodology for this type of evaluation developed for a particular knowledge-based indexing system is presented. It is suggested that the proposed study may serve as a model for the design of any evaluation in which the results of existing intellectual procedures are compared with results achieved when these procedures are aided by use of an appropriate expert system

    Abstract
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the UNISIST Study Report on the feasibility of a World Science Information System, this paper reconsiders the issue of compatibility of indexing languages in the context of the practice of science at the close of the twentieth century. Aspects of incompatibility and approaches to achieving compatibility are summarized, followed by identification of a research agenda for compatibility
