    Abstract
Describes the activities of the National Bibliographic Service, UK, in developing national bibliographies on CD-ROM. The key aims of the project, partly funded by the Commission of the European Communities under its IMPACT programme, are: to promote better and easier access to European and national bibliographies; to promote economies in library cataloguing through improved interchange of bibliographic records between European (and non European) national libraries, irrespective of differing national MARC formats; and to develop shared approaches to strategies, applications and formats for bibliographic data on CD-ROM. Notes the involvement of 7 national libraries and describes: CD-ROM retrieval interface; MARC conversions; character sets; multilingual interface; links to online systems; links to local library systems; menu systems and compatibility; the Pilot CD-ROM database; and framework for exchange of bibliographic records

    Abstract
The paper discusses the experiences of Schlumberger in designing and deploying knowledge management (KM) systems and outlines the empathic design techniques that are appropriate and productive for such applications. The user requirements for novel applications, such as Web-based KM systems, are difficult to establish using traditional research tools. It is challenging to determine the utility of innovative ways to access information prior to implementation and deployment. KM applications frequently serve as a testing ground for new business processes and models of communication and collaboration. Through the observation of the usage patterns, the empathic design approach facilitates the creation of more flexible systems that can be adapted to the real needs of the users. In the pre-Intranet environment, electronic information systems were designed for specially trained users, and this level of specialization was justified. The first Intranet navigation tools and systems were built on the principles of the pre-Intranet design, continuing the tradition of specialization. The global character of the Schlumberger Intranet led to the emergence of the new population of "occasional" users, who use many applications as their projects require. These users may never learn an application in depth, but they need to be efficient online. As a result, a "market" approach to designing the Schlumberger KM solutions became more popular, leading to the simplification of systems and interfaces, creation of a new classification system, and a better awareness of the users' needs. The new approach to the Intranet information systems in Schlumberger is reflected in the Schlumberger Knowledge Hub

    Abstract
OCLC has developed a strategic plan for its Reference Services Division to help it further the ease of access to, and use of, its worldwide body of knowledge and information. Describes the current library environment and the future where information distribution will shift to electronic means. To fulfil its mission under these conditions, the strategic plans call for OCLC to emphasize online information access; offer services to users through libraries; expand document ordering capabilities; expand database coverage; forge strategic alliances; improve the economics of information distribution to bring about widespread use of information

    Abstract
The EC National Libraries projct on CD-ROM, managed since its inceptiion in 1990 by NBS, drew to a close during the summer with the production of a pilot CD-ROM, The Explorers, which combines subsets of the national bibliographies of Denmark, Italy, Portugal and The Netherlands. The bibliographies can be searched collectively or individually and contain some 34.000 serial and monograph records. The records were all converted to UNIMARC format so that they could all be stored in one physical database, and the retrieval interface for The Explorers is in Danish, Dutch, Italian, Portugese, English, French and German

    Abstract
The British Library (BL) is CD-ROM as a medium for the distribution of bibliographic records. The BL has been looking at the possibilities for putting its data bases on CD-ROM and has collaborated with the Bibliothèque Nationale, France, to produce a pilot disc holding British and French bibliographic records which has been widely distributed. The BL plans to issue the British National Bibliography on CD-ROM this year, and progress is being made on other cooperative ventures between European national libraries.
