    Abstract
Presents a brief overview of the structure of expert systems and the main features of intelligent agent software. Discusses the potential uses for intelligent agents and assistants in the following library and information centre activities: information retrieval and catalogue searching; reference services; referral services, such as to distance education students; indexing and abstracting; collection development and acquisition; classification of library materials; and library education. Few intelligent agents are commercially available at present but this should change over the next few years
