    Abstract
Describes the development of a digital reference service at the National Museum of American Art (NMAA) of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, which represents a collaboration between the NMAA and America Online and was conceived as an outreach programme in 1993. Discusses its goals: to distribute art information to a national audience; to provide answers to the fullest; and to recruit new museum members. Outlines procedures developed to streamline the process and 1997 improvements
