- Abstract
- Most Swedish libraries use a Swedish classification scheme called SAB, but a switch to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is under consideration. The question of a Swedish switch to DDC was treated as part of a Catalogue Survey, conducted during 2006. Summarising the study, there is a lot to be said for a Swedish switch to DDC. If a switch became reality, mappings between SAB and DDC would play a crucial role as an aid both for librarians and library users. The article describes a project where a DDC arrangement of the Swedish National Bibliography should be achieved through mapping of the captions in the SAB arrangement. The methodology used is described, and problems are discussed. The article includes a comparison of DDC numbers achieved through mapping and manually added DDC numbers in a sample of bibliographic records. Future plans for DDC in Sweden are also discussed.

- Abstract
- This paper reports on an ongoing investigation of mixed translation models for the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system to support classification and access. A mixed translation uses DDC classes in the vernacular to form the basic framework of the mixed edition; English-language records are ingested directly to complete hierarchies where needed. Separate indexes of available terminology in the vernacular and English are provided. Specific Norwegian and Swedish mixed models are described, along with testing results of the Norwegian model. General implications of mixed translation models for knowledge organization in multilingual environments are considered.

- Abstract
- Describes some possible warrants for a classification scheme and the most common principles for classification. The present case study relates to the practitioneers of Linguistics in the Umea University departments of general linguistics and of Nordic languages. In 13 semi-structured interviews representatives were asked about the subject s structure, the principles in which it should be based, and how this structure compared with that of the Swedish classification scheme. Discusses the results and concludes that there is no dominant classification principle. This makes it difficult to construct a traditional hierarchical scheme. Suggests a scheme with different fields which resembles a system with controlled key words, but the division into fields makes it easier to cover as many as possible of the information potentials

- This paper explores the feasibility of developing mixed translations of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC system in countries/language groups where English enjoys wide use in academic and social discourse. A mixed translation uses existing DDC data in the vernacular plus additional data from the English-language full edition of the DDC to form a single mixed edition. Two approaches to mixed translations using Norwegian/English and Swedish/English DDC data are described, along with the design of a pilot study to evaluate use of a mixed translation as a classifier's tool.
