    Abstract
Outlines the development of the DDC scheme and its international acceptance. Discusses factors that have lead to its adoption as an international bibliographic standard. Examines the revision policies and mechanisms followed by those responsible for the maintenance of the scheme and indicates possible future developments

    Abstract
Describes the use of the DDC throughout the world, covering the translations available; the responses of those responsible for the maintenance of the classification and the need to internationalize the English-language editions; the activities of the profession in many countries in providing a focus for discussion an input into the editorial process; and the different ways the classification is used. Recommends a comprehensive international survey of use in order to provide evidence which would support its development as a more truly international scheme and the provision of variant publications to satisfy a wider international community
