    Abstract
The need to manage the ever-increasing morass of paper more effectively and efficiently has led to the evolution and acceptance of optical disk electronic document image processing (DIP) systems. But converting information on paper to a DIP system requires labor-intensive indexing. This automation effort generally includes optical character recognition (OCR) and intelligent character recognition (ICR) to convert all or selected portions of the document base to ASCII characters and the use of full-text indexing and retrieval systems. Bar-coding is also being used to automate the document indexing step. Automated indexing with OCR/ICR and bar-coding is being effectively used in DIP systems. Several examples are presented
