- Abstract
- In 1988 the Library of Congress and eight library participants undertook a two-year pilot known as the National Coordinated Cataloging Program (NCCP) to increase the number of quality bibliographic records. Subsequently the Bibliographic Services Study Committee reviewed the pilot. Discussions held at the Library of Congress (LC) and in other fora resulted in the creation of the Cooperative Cataloging Council, and, ultimately, the establishment of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) in 1994. The conditions that contributed to a successful approach to shared cataloging are described. The article concludes with considerations for expanding the future effectiveness of the PCC.

- Abstract
- CatTutor is a hypertext tutorial for training catalogers developed by the National Agricultural Library. The prototyüe covers the descriptive cataloging of computer files. Created in versions for the Apple Macintosh and for the IBM PC, CatTutor was tested by library school students and novice and expert catalogers during 1990 and 1991. CatTutor was found to demonstrate potential as a tool for training catalogers. Evaluators were enthusiatic about computer-assisted training and the machine-readable versions of the AACR2 and MARC format integrated in the program

- Abstract
- The quality of cataloguing is an issue that has engendered much discussion over decades of bibliographic control. Juxtaposed against the standard of full, accurate, and timely bibliographic records is the pressure to produce reliable access in a cost effective manner. In reviewing the definition of quality at the LoC, the relationship between quality cataloguing to copy cataloguing, minimal level cataloguing, the core bibliographic record, and outsourcing, concludes that the definition of quality is dynamic and dependent on the values and needs of catalogue users

- Abstract
- There is a long tradition of cooperative cataloging in the United States. Despite the existence of numerous cooperative programs in support of cataloging, there is a clear need for improving and increasing the contribution of original cataloging records to national and international databases. The authors outline several strategies to achieve these goals, including a change in the culture of cataloging, the development of enhanced information technologies to support authority control and other cataloging activities, and taking a fresh look at cooperative programs to democratize participation. In addition to these near term opportunities, there are also visions for the future that project more sophisticated expert systems and coordinated endeavors that link collection, processing, preservation, and resource-sharing

- Abstract
- The Program for Cooperative Cataloguing (PCC) seeks to increase the availability of unique records created in a decentralized fashion by a network of US libraries according to mutually acceptable standards. A critical element in achieving its mission is the core bibliographic record: a cataloguing record that embodies the principles of usefulness, cost effectiveness, and dynamism. The PCC intends that Program records, full or core, represent acceptable bibliographical control such that record 'tweaking' at the local level is minimized. Emphasis is on essential description and on the development of trust in others' bibliographic records, obviating the need for expensive revision and waste of scarce cataloguing resources
