    Abstract
    Begriffe wie Qualitätssicherung und Evaluation der Lehre verändern gegenwärtig die Hochschullandschaft - Multimedia bekommt dabei einen besonderen Stellenwert zugeschrieben: sein Einsatz vor allem auch in der Hochschullehre erfährt unter didaktischen wie pragmatischen Gesichtspunkten zunehmende Bedeutung. In der Praxis fehlt es jedoch noch oft an der notwendigen technischen und dienstleistungsbezogenen Infrastruktur für Studierende ebenso wie für Dozentinnen und Dozenten. Bibliotheken, Rechen- und Medienzentren sind deshalb dringend aufgefordert, kooperativ eine entsprechende Funktions- und Servicebasis für den Multimedia-Einsatz zu entwerfen. Dieser Aufforderung hoben sich die Universitätsbibliothek und das Hochschulrechenzentrum Essen gestellt: MILESS, der Multimediale Lehr- und Lernserver Essen, bietet eine technologische, inhaltliche und dienstleistungsbezogene Multimedia-Infrastruktur für die Hochschule, die deren Bedürfnisse in Forschung und Lehre umfassend erfüllt. Als technischer Sockel fungiert dabei die IBM Digital Library, auf dem aufsetzend eine spezifische MILESS-Software entwickelt wurde.     Abstract
    Die Spatzen pfeifen es von den Bibliotheksdächern: Information im weitesten Sinne - von der Fakteninformation bis zum Volltext, von der Print-Monographie bis zum E-Journal - gibt es immer mehr, der (Such- und Lese-) Tag des Informationsbedürftigen aber hat sich nicht verlängert, sondern bleibt hartnäckig bei 24 Stunden. Integration, Zusammenführung der nach wie vor dezentralen Angebote an einer zentralen Such-Stelle wird unvermeidlich, um dem hier drohenden Information Overkill zu begegnen - ohne allerdings damit gleich selbst wieder einen Beitrag zu leisten zum Mengenproblem: Integrierte Angebote müssen stets auch Individualisierungen, müssen fachliche und persönliche Zugänge und Profildienste ermöglichen, die je Überflüssiges sofort herausfiltern. Auf diesen Prämissen aufsetzend arbeitet INFOCONNEX, der Informationsverbund Bildung-Sozialwissenschaften-Psychologie - in der Trias seiner drei fachlichen Inhaltsbereiche und darüber hinaus im Kontext der drei weiteren Informationsverbünde und der über zwanzig Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken. Alle diese Informationsstrukturen gemeinsam entwickeln, gefördert von der DFG und dem BMBF, mit VASCODA einen zentralen Zugang, ein zentrales Portal zur Breite der wissenschaftlichen Information in Deutschland.

    Abstract
    Eines der wichtigsten neuen Handlungsfelder der Forschung, das im Zuge der Digitalisierung von Information entstanden ist, ist das Management von Forschungsdaten. Die Hochschulen müssen sich darauf einstellen, ihren Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern die notwendigen Strukturen und Services zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die in der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) organisierten Leitungen der deutschen Hochschulen sehen darin eine zentrale Aufgabe. Die Universität Münster geht mit gutem Beispiel voran: In enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Hochschulleitung hat die Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek damit begonnen, Strukturen und Services zur Unterstützung des Forschungsdatenmanagements aufzubauen.

    Abstract
    Seit den ersten Annäherungsversuchen der Bibliothekswelt an die elektronische Datenverarbeitung bis heute ist bereits ein langer Weg zurückgelegt worden. Am Beginn stand in den 1970er und 1980erJahren die Automatisierung der bibliotheksinternen Arbeitsprozesse, die Katalogisierung anfänglich im Offline-Verfahren, die Ausleihverbuchung und die Erwerbungsautomatisierung, woraus sich integrierte Lokalsysteme entwickelten. Mit dem World Wide Web waren die Voraussetzungen für den OPAC,einen Meilenstein im Aufbau endnutzerorientierter bibliothekarischer Dienstleistungen, vor allem aber auch für die grundlegende Veränderung des Literaturmarktes gegeben: neben der klassischen Printwelt bildete sich seit der zweiten Hälfte der-1990er Jahre ein rasant wachsendes Angebot an elektronischen Medien - Datenbanken, elektronischen Zeitschriften und E-Books-heraus, eine gewaltige Herausforderung für die wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken. Dazu trat seit Mitte der iggoer Jahre die Retrodigitalisierung der Bibliotheksbestände. Im ersten Jahrzehnt des 21. Jahrhunderts stand dann der konsequente Ausbau eines strikt nutzerorientierten innovativen Dienstleistungsangebots im Mittelpunkt - genannt seien Stichworte wie Such maschinentechnologie, Kataloganreicherung, SFX-Technologie oder Web 2.0.
