    Abstract
Paper presented at the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) Conference, Vienna, 1988, at the combined session of the Training and Cataloguing Committees. Describes aspects and problems of communication of audiovisual (AV) holdings in state archives in West Germany. Archival materials in AV form discussed include film, sound recordings, photographic images, maps and posters. The following observations are made: the preservation of AV materials is more important than their communication; because of the great variety of AV-holdings, no uniform guidelines are valid for the communication of all AV materials; because of the large size of AV-holdings, the summarised way of communication predominates, both for individual and group description; and even the most detailed description of a picture-posteror a photographic image cannot act as a substitute for the original or a reproduction.
