Abstract: Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek, der Europeana, wie sie inzwischen heißt, ist eingebettet in verschiedene Aktivitäten und Initiativen der Europäischen Kommission, die bereits 2005 gestartet wurden. Im Folgenden soll die Entwicklung seit der am 30. September 2005 veröffentlichten Mitteilung nachgezeichnet und ein Überblick über die Aktivitäten insbesondere der Nationalbibliotheken gegeben werden.
