    Konkurrenz belebt das Geschäft, so auch im vorliegenden Fall. Was freilich verhindert werden muss, ist zunächst, auf bibliothekarischer Seite hochnäsig und beleidigt zu reagieren, denn was Google allein bisher konzipiert und realisiert hat, ist in seiner Grundidee viel zu wertvoll, als dass man es pauschal in Misskredit bringen dürfte. Eine deutsche bzw. gesamteuropäische Initiative dürfte bei der Massendigitalisierung von Altbestand nicht blind >irgendwelche< Magazinbestände bündeln, sondern intellektuellen Aufwand betreiben, um langfristig belastbare und plausible Kriterien zu entwickeln, was digitalisiert werden soll und was vorerst nicht. Erst wer die Relevanz des jeweiligen Buches für die Forschung, die Seltenheit des Werkes, seine Nachfrage innerhalb der Forscherszene, seine allgemeine kulturelle Bedeutung sowie den konservatorischen Zustand der heute erhaltenen Exemplare in Betracht zieht, schafft einen qualitativen Mehrwert gegenüber Google. ... Google macht neugierig - und das allein ist wünschenswert und erfreulich. Zugleich fordert uns Google massiv heraus: sicherlich für manche unerwünscht und lästig, objektiv betrachtet aber die vielleicht einzige Möglichkeit, die Verzögerung Europas in Digitalisierungsfragen zu stoppen. Dem Verlag Wagenbach sei gedankt, die Kontroverse um Google durch eine Übersetzung der streitbaren Thesen Jeanneneys auch in Deutschland entfacht zu haben."
