- Im Zeitalter der elektronischen Medien ist "Information" zu einem schillernden Schlagwort geworden. Sie legt die Basis für Entscheidungsprozesse und bestimmt unser Denken und Handeln. Doch was ist Information und wie funktioniert sie? Das Buch stellt das Thema erstmals aus der Sicht der Informationstheorie, der Wahrnehmung, des Denkens und der Sprache dar. Auf interdisziplinärer Ebene wird der Informationsbegriff erarbeitet. Wie erlangen Daten Sinn und Bedeutung? Das Werk behandelt die Natur der Informationsflüsse und diskutiert die Rolle des Kontextes. Zahlreiche Beispiele und Abbildungen unterstützen die Erläuterungen. - Abstract
- Wir befänden uns auf dem Weg ins "Zeitalter der spirituellen Maschinen" (so der Originaltitel) und seien schon (z.B. mit Schach-, Poesie- und Übersetzungs-Computern, an deren Entwicklung und Vermarktung der Autor wesentlich beteiligt war) weit auf diesem Weg vorangekommen. Das Buch selbst ist - "mit Hilfe eines Spracherkennungsprogramms" teilweise direkt in den PC diktiert und mit vielen Internet-Quellen-Hinweisen versehen - ein weiteres Beispiel hierfür. Diese Entwicklung gehe weiter, nicht etwa nur linear, sondern "mit wachsenden Ertragszuwächsen", d.h. exponentiell. Was das konkret für Bildung, Behinderte(n-Integration), Kommunikation, Wirtschaft, Politik, Kunst, Militär und Medizin bedeuten könnte, wird mit Prognosen für 2009, 2019, 2029 und einem Ausblick auf 2099 erläutert. Zur Plausibilität seiner Prognosen verweist der Autor ausführlich und stolz darauf, daß wesentliche Prognosen seines Werkes "KI: das Zeitalter der künstlichen Intelligenz" punktgenau eingetroffen seien. Ein anregendes, durch Personen- und Sach-Register gut erschlossenes Werk.

- Abstract
- Multimedia wird unser Leben vermutlich ähnlich einschneidend verändern, wie der Buchdruck im 15. Jahrhundert unsere gesamte Kultur revolutioniert hat. Welche Veränderungen die neue Kommunikationstechnologie bringen wird, hängt nicht nur von der Hard- und Software der Multimediasysteme ab, sondern auch von der Hard- und Software des Menschen - von Gehirnprozessen und psychologischen 'Programmen' beim Denken, Wahrnehmen und Fühlen. Die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen multimedialer Information werden deutlich, wenn man sich etwa vor Augen führt, wie viel Information wir allein beim Sehen ausblenden, wie wir Information im Gedächtnis abspeichern, wie wir verschiedenen Sinne synchronisieren. Auch für Medien gilt: Weniger ist manchmal mehr. Wenn man das Buch in die Hand nimmt und die Demonstrationsprogramme auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM dazu anschaut, wird man verstehen, warum es immer noch gewinnbringend ist, ein Buch zu lesen, und warum es durch ein elektronisches Medium sinnvoll ergänzt werden kann
