- Abstract
- In Germany there are currently only 3 public libraries which supply information by means of external data bases: the munipical library systems of Duisburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. Staff members belonging to the working group which has been established by these 3 institutions report their experiences to date. Findings revealed that data base searches offer a valuable supplement to the traditional reference tools, that new groups of users can be won by providing electronic information retrieval, and that the image of the library was raised in the eyes of the general public and the city administration. On the other hand, considerable effort is necessary in order to publicise the service and there are significant costs involved for the library and its users
