Die Encarta wartet jetzt mit einem "Wissenskompass" auf, der ähnliche Themen vernetzt und hilft, vertiefende Informationen zu finden. Der neue Weg, das Lexikon zu erschließen, präsentiert sich gleich zum Start in Form von Spielkarten mit ausgewählten Themen, die in einem endlosen Reigen von A bis Z über den Bildschirm ziehen. Beim Anklicken der Karte von Theodor W Adorno - der Philosoph wurde vor 100 Jahren geboren - öffnet sich ein Karussell mit 20 Themenkarten von abendländischer Philosophie über den kritischen Rationalismus bis zu Zeitgenossen wie Herbert Marcuse oder Jürgen Habermas. Gibt es zu einem Suchbegriff keinen Artikel vor, schaltet sich die Volltextsuche ein. Wenn die Encarta passen muss, verzweigt sie zur Web-Suchmaschine von Microsofts Network MSN. Die Zeitleiste startet mit der Entstehung der Trilobiten im Meer vor 570 Millionen Jahren und endet mit dem Beginn des Irak-Kriegs am 20. März. Nachträge lassen sich aus dem Internet laden. Aktuellere Nachträge werden aus dem Internet heruntergeladen, so dass die Encarta auch das Ende des Krieges parat hat. Die reichhaltigen Audio-Beispiele erstrecken sich vom Ruf der Delfine über Mozart bis zu Abba. Die Auswahl an Videosequenzen wurde von 170 auf 214 Minifilme vergrößert. "Enzyklopädische Karten" geben darüber hinaus Auskunft über historische und statistische Entwicklungen. Die Professional-Version der Encarta mit vier CDs oder einer DVD kostet 119 Euro. An Systemvoraussetzungen werden ein Prozessor ab 33 Megahertz, Windows (ab 98) und mindestens 64 MB RAM verlangt."
