    Philadelphia, PA, USA January 23, 2002 - Today, ISI®, a Thomson business, announced that BIOSIS Previews®, produced by Biological Abstracts, Inc (BIOSIS) and available through ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, will include new searching and linking capabilities-enabling researchers to find the information they need to facilitate discovery. BIOSIS Previews, with coverage back to 1969, is the largest collection of biological sciences records in the world. The new search features provided by ISI Web of Knowledge enable users to search BIOSIS Previews more efficiently and comprehensively. Biosystematic code and name searching offer users the option of searching for groups of organisms by a term or combination of terms. Users will also be able to identify articles where authors have announced a new species. Concept code searching allows users to enter the five-digit code corresponding to a broad subject area in the life sciences. Users can select a specific time period for searching and limit retrieval by language and/or document type and organism. BIOSIS Previews version 2.0 enables users to link directly to cited references, times cited, and related records in ISI Web of Science*. Users can also link directly to the full text of articles. In addition, users will be able to link to ISI ProceedingsSM and ISI Current Contents Connect*.

    Abstract
    Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft hat 1998 in ihrem Memorandum zur "Weiterentwicklung der überregionalen Literaturversorgung" die aus den neuen Entwicklungen in der Szene der Fachinformationen resultierenden Anforderungen an die Sondersammelgebietsbibliotheken formuliert und den Aufbau der Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken angeregt. Diese Anforderungen betreffen vor allem die Ausdehnung des Sammelauftrages auf digitale Publikationen und Fachinformationen sowie die Entwicklung neuer Dienstleistungen in Kooperation mit nationalen und internationalen Partnern. In zahlreichen, von der DFG geförderten Projekten werden derzeit Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken realisiert. Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Technik gehört zu den ersten Projekten in diesem Programm. Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Technik, die seit April 2000 im Netz ist, bietet Ingenieuren und anderen interessierten Fachleuten einen integrierten Zugang zu fachrelevanten Informationen und Dienstleistungen. In der Virtuellen Fachbibliothek Technik werden alle Informationsquellen, die für Ingenieure von Bedeutung sind, integriert. Neben der Literatur sind auch neue Formen von Informationsquellen, wie z.B. Kooperationsbörsen, Börsen für gebrauchte Maschinen, Kompetenznetze, elektronische Produktkataloge, Konferenzkalender und Diskussionslisten, integriert. Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Technik verzeichnet nicht nur kostenfreie Internet-Sites, sondern auch kostenpflichtige und konventionelle Informationsquellen. Maßgebend ist die fachliche Relevanz. Der Nutzer soll über die Existenz von hochwertigen Quellen informiert werden und selbst entscheiden können, welche er letztendlich nutzt. Das Verzeichnen von ausschließlich kostenlosen Internetressourcen, was in vielen Virtual Libraries praktiziert wird, erweckt beim Nutzer oft den falschen Eindruck, dass es nur diese Informationsquellen gäbe. Das Ziel der Virtuellen Fachbibliothek Technik besteht in der Integration bestehender Angebote. Nach Möglichkeit sollen weiterreichende Kooperationen mit den Informationsproduzenten im In- und Ausland vereinbart werden. Nur durch Synergieeffekte kann ein hochqualitatives, viele Aspekte umfassendes Angebot dem Fachpublikum geboten werden.     Abstract
    The 18th century libraries were beautiful and manageable. Limited and manageable was also the totality of human knowledge. Today's electronic helpers were not yet necessary. The 18th century marks also an important change how knowledge was organized. In the age of Enlightenment a turning away from an inflexible and creation centered system towards an open and flexible organization of knowledge took place. The changing can be traced very well by looking at the examples of three encyclopedic forms of knowledge organization: the "Margarita Philosophica" of Gregor Reisch at 1508, the "Encyclopedic ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des metiers" of Dennis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, that has been created between 1750 and 1780, and the Memex concept by Vannevar Bush published in 1945. They all are popular examples of knowledge organization that minted without a doubt the thinking of a whole society.

    Abstract
    Das Web 2.0 hat einen Paradigmenwechsel im Umgang mit Informationen und damit eng verbunden im Wissenserwerb eingeleitet. Theoretisch gesehen hat jeder offenen Zugang zu vielfältigen Informationen und kann gleichzeitig selbst Inhalte beisteuern - z.B. in Sozialen Netzwerken, in Weblogs oder Wikis - und Websites oder andere Dokumente (Videos, Slideshows o.ä.) veröffentlichen und mit anderen Nutzern teilen. Dieser Demokratisierungsprozess von Wissensproduktion, -kommunikation und -erwerb ist allerdings nicht frei von Kontroversen. Das verstärkte Nebeneinander von sachlich richtiger und relevanter Information einerseits und Belanglosigkeiten andererseits ruft auch Gegner auf den Plan. Sie sprechen von einem Information Overkill und befürchten den Niedergang der klassischen Bildung. Führen freie Wissenszugänge im Netz tatsächlich zu weniger Bildung? Was macht eine Website zu einer zuverlässigen und vertrauenswürdigen Quelle? Wie können aus der Fülle von Webressourcen die qualitativ hochwertigen herausgefiltert werden? Welchen Beitrag kann dabei Social Software leisten?
