- Abstract
- Die letzten Jahre waren von einem rasanten Wandel im Bereich der Medien und der Kommunikation geprägt. Was anfänglich ein von militärischen Interessen inspiriertes technisches Kommunikationsmittel war und Mitte der neunziger Jahre einen wirtschaftlichen Boom grösseren Ausmasses ausgelöst hatte um schliesslich an der Schwelle zum neuen Jahrtausend eine realistischere Einschätzung zu erfahren, ist heute schlicht Teil unseres Alltages geworden: das Internet. Die Hälfte der schweizerischen Bevölkerung gehört mittlerweile zu den regelmässigen oder unregelmässigen Internet-Usern (Stand anfangs 2001), eine von drei Personen surft mehrmals pro Woche im World Wide Web. Auch die Wissenschaft ist von dieser Entwicklung nicht unberührt geblieben: Eine der umfassendsten Analysen zu diesem Thema legte Michael Nentwich im Auftrag des Instituts für Technikfolgenabschätzung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und dem Max-Planck-Institut für Gesellschaftsforschung in Köln 1999 vor. Nentwich geht von der These aus, dass die Informations- und Kommunikationstechniken "einige Rahmenbedingungen und praktisch alle Formen wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit betreffen". Involviert sind (respektive werden sein) die Formen der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation und die Wissensvermittlung, aber auch der organisatorische Rahmen des Wissenschaftsbetriebes und die Art und Weise der Wissensproduktion. Diese Veränderungen, so Nentwich weiter, werden nicht nur - wie heute zumeist angenommen - die Kommunikation beschleunigen, sondern sie haben "das Potential zu qualitativen Veränderungen des Wissenschaftssystems". Dass die Auswirkungen dieses Wandels höchst vielfältig sind, zeigt ein Blick in die Flut neuer und neuester Studien und Stellungnahmen zu diesem Thema. Die breit angelegte SteFi-Studie (Studieren mit elektronischen Fachinformationen) zum Beispiel kam zu folgendem Schluss: Die Informationskompetenz der meisten Studierenden ist unzureichend; sie empfinden das Angebot elektronischer Informationen als unübersichtlich und sehen sich ausserstande, die Qualität der Ergebnisse zu bewerten. Gleichzeitig hielt die SteFi-Studie auch fest, dass das Internet zunehmend zum Informationsmedium Nummer 1 bei der Suche nach wissenschaftlicher Literatur geworden ist.

- Gemeinsam mit den Repräsentanten der großen deutschen und internationalen Wissenschaftsorganisationen hat Prof. Peter Gruss, der Präsident der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, am 22. Oktober die folgende »Berliner Erklärung über offenen Zugang zu wissenschaftlichem Wissen« (Berlin Declaration an Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities) unterzeichnet. Vorausgegangen war eine dreitägige Konferenz in Berlin. Dabei diskutierten international führende Experten über neue Zugangsmöglichkeiten zu wissenschaftlichem Wissen und kulturellem Erbe durch das Internet.

- Spannend für Medienmacher ist an Twitter, dass seine Nutzer oft über Themen schreiben, die den Medien sonst entgehen würden. So wie die einst belächelten Blogs längst zu einer wichtigen Quelle geworden sind, entwickelt sich auch Twitter langsam zu einer Hilfe bei der Suche nach Themen und Protagonisten. Dass nun auch Suchmaschinen wie Bing Twitter durchsuchen, werde aktuelle Nachrichtenströme deutlich beschleunigen, sagt Professor Christoph Neuberger, der am Institut für Kommunikationswissenhaft der Uni Münster den Einfluss des Internet auf den Journalismus untersucht. Dank Echtzeitsuche sei es zwar möglich zu sehen, welches Thema die Netz-Community beschäftig. "Es wäre aber fatal, wenn Journalisten allein daraus Trends für Themen ableiten." Schließlich twittern in Deutschland nur einige Zehntausend Menschen, die nicht repräsentativ für die Bevölkerung oder auch nur die Stammleserschaft einer Zeitung sein können. Der Forscher sieht in dem Dienst aber auch noch ganz andere Chancen: Journalisten müssten im digitalen Zeitalter stärker die Rolle der Moderatoren einnehmen, sagt er. "Ein Artikel ist nicht mit dem letzten Punkt fertig. Die Geschichte entwickelt sich weiter, wenn Journalisten darüber mit Lesern diskutieren, Ideen aufnehmen oder Belege im Netz suchen." Zeitmangel größtes Hindernis - Das kann über Twitter sehr gut funktionieren: Wird ein Artikel eifrig kommentiert und per Link weitergereicht, kann sich der Autor in die Diskussion einschalten und die Reaktionen einarbeiten - etwa wenn Nutzer einen Fehler entdeckt haben oder weitere Informationen und Links anbieten. Dafür müssten sich die Journalisten aber erstens vom Sockel der Allwissenheit bewegen und akzeptieren, dass es immer jemanden gibt, der mehr über ein Thema weiß als sie selbst. Und zweitens müssen sie die Zeit haben, einen Artikel notfalls mehrfach zu aktualisieren."
