- Abstract
- Die intellektuelle Erschließung des Internet befindet sich in einer Krise. Yahoo und andere Dienste können mit dem Wachstum des Web nicht mithalten. GERHARD ist derzeit weltweit der einzige Such- und Navigationsdienst, der die mit einem Roboter gesammelten Internetressourcen mit computerlinguistischen und statistischen Verfahren auch automatisch vollständig klassifiziert. Weit über eine Million HTML-Dokumente von wissenschaftlich relevanten Servern in Deutschland können wie bei anderen Suchmaschinen in der Datenbank gesucht, aber auch über die Navigation in der dreisprachigen Universalen Dezimalklassifikation (ETH-Bibliothek Zürich) recherchiert werden

- Informationsangebote im Internet sind immer häufiger nicht nur Referenzinformationen, sondern Textinformationen. Somit ist es die von den Interessenten gewünschte Information selbst, die als Textpublikation oder als Ausschnitt aus einer solchen Publikation mit den entsprechenden Retrieval- und Anzeigeinstrumenten direkt bereitgestellt wird. Diese Texte haben ganz unterschiedliche Entstehungszusammenhänge. Sie werden z.B. speziell und gezielt als Internet-Informationsangebote neu erstellt. als wissenschaftliche Publikationen im Interesse leichter und schneller Verbreitung in Form von Preprints oder Parallelpublikationen über das Netz bereitgestellt oder als elektronische Reprints wissenschaftlich Interessierten erneut und in neuer Form zur Verfügung gestellt. - HyperWave ist der Produktname, unter dem das erste WWW-System der zweiten Generation erhältlich ist und das an der TU Graz unter Leitung von Prof. Hermann Maurer entwickelt wurde. Der bisher wohl bekanntere Name des Systems ider der Codename der Entwicklung - Hyper-G. - Abstract
- Der Computer ist eine Technologie der symbolischen Repräsentation und der Kommunikation, kurz - eine Technologie des Schreiens. In den achtziger Jahren machte der Personal Computer (PC) diese Technologie einer großen Zahl von Autoren wie Lesern in Europa, Nordamerika und Japan verfügbar. Heute eröffnet das Internet neue Formen der Publikation: es befreit das elektronische Schreiben aus dem individuellen Computer und verbreitet es über ein die gesamte entwickelte Welt umspannendes Netzwerk aus Maschinen. Das World Wide Web im Internet ist ein methodisches Verfahren, welches das elektronische Schreiben schließlich in die Lage versetzt, sich von Schreibweisen für gedruckte Publikationen deutlich zu unterscheiden. Eine neue Ökonomie des Schreibens, ein neues Zusammenspiel von technischen Geräten und den Weisen, mit ihnen umzugehen, beginnt sich auszubreiten.

- Abstract
- Die Digitale Bibliothek hat viele Gesichter und viele Funktionen, Kein des Begriffs ist die Aufbereitung, Zugänglichkeit und Verarbeitung von digitalen - aber auch nichtdigitalen - Quellen. Das Management von elektronischen Informationsressourcen birgt neue Strukturen, neue Paradigmen, neue Arbeitsweisen und neue Informationsvermittlungsmethoden. Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw. des "data smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben
