    Abstract
    Gegenstand dieses Buches ist das User Interface Blended Shelf, welches die Erfahrung des Regal-Browsings jenseits des physischen Ortes Bibliothek ermöglicht. Das Regal-Browsing bietet Nutzern zahlreiche Vorteile und wird aktiv als Recherchestrategie eingesetzt. Für Bibliotheken gibt es bisher kaum einsetzbare und erprobte Anwendungen, die das Regal-Browsing digital, und damit losgelöst vom Einsatzort und der Nutzungszeit, ermöglichen. Ziel des Buches ist es, ein User Interface zu entwickeln, welches die Erfahrung des Regal-Browsings digital anbietet, ohne dabei die wesentlichen Vorteile zu verlieren, die stark im physischen Raum verankert sind. Um dies zu erreichen, werden im ersten Teil der Thesis anhand der theoretischen Hintergründe des Regal-Browsings, einer Umfeld- und Bedarfsanalyse sowie verwandter Arbeiten grundlegende Anforderungen erhoben. Die theoretisch formulierten Anforderungen bilden das Fundament für die konkrete Implementierung, die Funktionsweise und das realitätsbasierte Interaktionsdesign des Bleded Shelf. Dies Aspekte werden im mittleren Teil der Arbeit dargestellt. Um zu prüfen, ob die Implementierung die Anforderungen erfüllt und die Benutzerschnittstelle von Nutzern als als hilfreich und nutzbar wahrgenommen wird, wurde eine umfangreiche Feldstudie durchgeführt.

    Abstract
    Es geht bei der kapitalistischen Verwendungsweise des Computers um mehr als die skandalösen Erfassungs- und Kontrollaktivitäten, denn sie führt zu problematischen Veränderungen in vielen Lebensbereichen: Durch die Verallgemeinerung digitaler Techniken erodieren zivilisatorische Standards, veröden Alltagsbeziehungen und wird ein marktkonformer Lebensrhythmus durchgesetzt. Die Persönlichkeitsstruktur wird durch die "Computer-Praxis" so umgeformt, dass sie mit der ununterbrochenen Tätigkeit der Märkte und Informationsnetze übereinstimmt. Digital flankierte Anpassungsprozesse sind die aktuellen Mechanismen, mit denen der Kapitalismus sich jene Menschen schafft, die er für sein reibungsloses Funktionieren auf hochtechnologischer Grundlage benötigt.

    Abstract
    Unter dem Titel "Pioniere der Informationswissenschaft" veröffentlicht der Hochschulverband für Informationswissenschaft (HI) e.V. Konstanz einen wichtigen Teil der Arbeiten der InformationswissenschaftlerInnen der ersten Stunde, damit diese für die Fachwissenschaft präsent gehalten werden. Heutzutage ist im Prinzip alles, was veröffentlicht ist, digital zugänglich, sodass gefragt werden könnte, ob solche auf einzelne Personen bezogenen Herausgaben noch zeitgemäß sind. Doch, sie sind es. Die Welt der Wissenschaft hat auch vor, sagen wir 1990 existiert. Die meisten Arbeiten aus der Zeit davor wurden analog publiziert und existieren im digitalen Gedächtnis des Internets einfach nicht. Wer nicht weiß, woher er kommt, hat Probleme auszumachen, wohin er oder sie in der Zukunft gehen soll. Das gilt auch für Fachdisziplinen. Das ist das eine. Zum andern bietet das Genre einer gewiss selektiven Zusammenstellung zentraler Publikationen einer Person - sozusagen ihr wissenschaftliches Lebenswerk - einen Mehrwert gegenüber einzelnen Arbeiten ohne deren Gesamtkontext. Ob diese Zusammenstellungen, analog und elektronisch zugänglich, mehr als Dokumentationen sind und als Steinbruch für Arbeiten der gegenwärtigen Generation genutzt werden können, muss die Zeit zeigen.

    Abstract
    An original methodological framework for approaching the archived web, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. As life continues to move online, the web becomes increasingly important as a source for understanding the past. But historians have yet to formulate a methodology for approaching the archived web as a source of study. How should the history of the present be written? In this book, Niels Brügger offers an original methodological framework for approaching the web of the past, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. While many studies of the web focus solely on its use and users, Brügger approaches the archived web as a semiotic, textual system in order to offer the first book-length treatment of its scholarly use. While the various forms of the archived web can challenge researchers' interactions with it, they also present a range of possibilities for interpretation. The Archived Web identifies characteristics of the online web that are significant now for scholars, investigates how the online web became the archived web, and explores how the particular digitality of the archived web can affect a historian's research process. Brügger offers suggestions for how to translate traditional historiographic methods for the study of the archived web, focusing on provenance, creating an overview of the archived material, evaluating versions, and citing the material. The Archived Web lays the foundations for doing web history in the digital age, offering important and timely guidance for today's media scholars and tomorrow's historians.
