- Die jüngste Entwicklung deutet darauf hin, daß durch eine schnelle Verkableung aller Haushalte schon bald bis zu 36 Fernseh- und Rundfunkprogramme von den unterschiedlichsten Programmgestaltern möglich werden. Dazu kommen zahllose neue elektronische Kommunikationsnetze und -systeme. - Dieser Forschungsbericht ist die überarbeitete Fassung des 1979 fertiggestellten Ergebnisberichts über die zweite Phase des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanzierten Projekts "Benutzerforschung II". Während im Projekt I mit einer schriftlichen Befragung die Benutzer-Orientierungen, wie Verhaltensweisen, Einstellungen und Bewertungen bezüglich aller Funktionsbereiche von wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken erkundet wurden, konzentriert sich das Projekt II auf die Benutzung der von den wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken erstellten Informationsmittel, wobei es um Recherchen an alphabetischen Katalogen, Sachkatalogen und Freihandbeständen geht

- Abstract
- Bibliothekare der UB Oldenburg berichten über ihre Erfahrungen, die Praxis und die Planungen mit dem Bibliotheksautomatisierungssystem URICA der Firma McDonnell Douglas. Die Berichte sind keine Werbeschriften, zum Teil stellen sie kritisch die noch notwendigen Anpassungen an die Bedürfnisse in wissenschaftlichen und öffentlichen Bibliotheken aus der Sicht der Oldenburger Erfahrung dar. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden nicht zuletzt auf der Grundlage eines mit der Fa. McDonnell Douglas geschlossenen Beratungsvertrages in die Weiterentwicklung eines Systems URICA-deutsch einfließen

- Abstract
- Die Rolle der Symmetrie als Werkzeug der Orientierung des Menschen in Raum und Zeit ist in allen Epochen und Zivilisationen aufzuspüren. Sowohl das natur- und geisteswissenschaftliche Denken als auch die Künste und die Prinzipien menschlicher Handelns neigen dazu, sich in Strukturen symmetrischer Natur auszuformen. Zum Beispiel hat die zeitgenössische Physik, mit dem Rüstzeug der modernen Mathematik versehen, den Symmetriebegriff ins Zentrum des Interesses gerückt. Die in den letzten Jahren so erfolgreichen Bemühungen um eine Vereinheitlichung der Grundkräfte der Natur, die damit verbundene tiefe Einsicht in den Kosmos der Elementarteilchen und die daraus hervorgegangenen kosmologischen Erkenntnisse sind beeindruckende Belege für die Wirklichkeit des Symmetrieprinzips. Welche Faszination der Symmetriebegriff ausübt, zeigt die folgende Themenauswahl: Sir Ernst Gombrich - Symmetrie, Wahrnehmung und künstlerische Gestaltung; Hermann Haken - Die Rolle der Symmetrie in der Synergetik: Spontane Entstehung von Strukturen in der Natur; Frei Otto - Symmetrie zwischen Biologie und Architektur; Heinz-Otto Peitgen - Symmetrie im Chaos - Selbstähnlichkeit in komplexen Systemen. - Abstract
- Die automatische Indexierung von Dokumenten für das Information Retrieval, d. h. die automatische Charakterisierung von Dokumentinhalten mittels Deskriptoren (Schlagwörtern) ist bereits seit über 25 Jahren ein Gebiet theoretischer und experimenteller Forschung. Dagegen wurde erst im Oktober 1985 mit der Anwendung der automatischen Indexierung in der Inputproduktion für ein großes Retrievalsystem begonnen. Es handelt sich um die Indexierung englischer Referatetexte für die Physik-Datenbasis des Informationszentrums Energie, Physik, Mathematik GmbH in Karlsruhe. In dem vorliegenden Buch beschreiben Mitarbeiter der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt ihre Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten, die zu dieser Pilotanwendung geführt haben.
