    Abstract
Describes the result of seminars on the software package, Allegro, on 27-28 Oct and 3-4 Nov 88, organised by Brunswick Technical University Library and the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, in order to provide an opportunity for exchanging experiences on different Allegro applications, as well as information on current developments of Allegro and its prospects. Examines a series of case histories, including the use of Allegro in small libraries for cataloguing and the production of card catalogues, the creation of lists of new titles and subject catalogues for circulation, the cataloguing of periodicals with data in MARC format on CD-ROM, the use of Allegro in both MS-DOS and UNIX environment, and improvements in response times, as well as the introduction of window technology.

    Abstract
Account of the enquiries addressed to a beginner at the central information desk of Oldenburg University library. The desk is placed were it is easily disturbed, especially by the telephone. For the more complex enquiries the librarian needs to question the user in order to formulate a specific query for searching. Librarians must choose whether to indicate the reference tools to the user or to find the information themselves. Hindrances are queues, lack of confidence in users, inexacteness of request.

    Abstract
The Protestant grammar school in Gütersloh shares a microfiche union catalogue with Gütersloh public library, The school also acquired a microcomputer for cataloguing and list production. The EUMEL operational system is particulary suitable for schools and is used here in all automated procedures. The EBIS program has developed in consultation with pupils since 1986. The system can administer a data stock of up to 65.000 units. Input and search programs are described; there is also a print-out program.

Traces the history of the International Esperanto Museum in the Australian National Library from its origin in 1927 as a private collection, showing how Esperanto is now classified as a blueprint. Discusses its place in language evolution and its relationship to the DDC, as well as its links with algorithmic languages, automatic language translation with Esperanto as a catalyst and the museum's role in research

    Abstract
It is important to ensure data integrity, consistency and safety in a new data bank. The Systematischer Katalog-Musikalien (The Classified Catalogue of Musical Scores) in the music department of the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek (East German national library) was first produced in computerised form over a year ago. The programme permits many automated checks and controls concerning the correctness and completeness of stored data. Other checking procedures are performed by staff at the keyboard. At present the data bank contains over 3.000 entries for composers, titles and subjects.

    Abstract
Reflects on the situation a few years ago in the field of subject access in libraries and evaluates the present situation in the light of recent developments. Discusses factors which characterise the situation in West Germany today. Examines the organisation of cooperative subject access during the course of which various relationships are explored, and the dovetailing of the network and local library operations, and the formation of local and on-line catalogues are discussed. Describes the relationship between formal and subject access; discusses cooperation in the allocation of catchwords, and cooperation in classified subject access; and addresses 2 forms of cooperative subject access

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
Identifies the value of interlibrary cooperation and the extent to which Conspectus can be of service to it, briefly outlining the origins of Conspectus in the 1980s in the USA under the Research Libraries Group and later the Association of Research Libraries. Describes Conspectus as a subject hierarchical grouping of library book collections, arranged in levels as: 25 divisions, 250 categories and 5.500 subjects. Hierarchical notation follows the LC classmark pattern. Explains the use of a numeric coding on a scale of 0-5 to indicate the level of coverage in any required subject for libraries participating in Conspectus, as well as coding to indicate the language in which the required material is written

    Abstract
Examines restrictions on international cooperation over information transfer, such as the users' Inability to express needs properly pr the arrival of irrelevant information or their lack of contact with information sources-publishers, booksellers and libraries. Covers the inernational cooperation, including the involvment of the UNO, UNESCO, IZWTL, IFLA, ICA and FID, as well as legal barriers over protected information including industrial secrets and copyright. Also discusses the different national financial contraints on library funding, commodity price rises in capitalist countries, geographical barriers limiting telex and fax links, regional courier services, international jounal echanges, language barriers, including the growing number of languages ued in scientific publications, and the possible contribution by libraries to the dismatling of informtion barriesrs, especially the IFLA nuclear programme.

    Abstract
Outlines the advantages of knowledge-based systems, developed as a form of artificial intelligence and transformed into partially effective expert systems, including the concept of logical programming or defining all relevant knowledge to satisfy logical conditions or IF-THEN rules, instead of a traditional, algorithmic programming language. Links the features of PROLOG to these concepts, along with its capacity as a machine language for future 5th generation computers, including microcomputers. Examines how logical programming allows bibliographical data and processes to be described, and the development of the inter-library bibliographic data base DALIS for producing booklists for state libraries.
