    Abstract
Free text searching with keywords in a complete data store is not necessarily the best automatic retrieval method. There must be a proper classification of documents and concepts and the use of a proper classification system avoids problems of terminological deficiency. The dialogue search form makes the on-line catalogue a new information medium. A bibliographic unit must be created with as many search access points as possible, using verbal and classificatory search elements. Verbal search categories must include free text elements for individual search access requirements and a controlled vocabulary with syntactic connections. Classified data should consist of a universal classification system with clear structural notation for access and surface searching, together with several specialist subject classifications for differentiated documentation and retrieval. The universal classification needs no detailed subdivision: it serves mainly as a guide and entry to the detailed sub-systems

    Abstract
The information avalanche will continue, but the information problem can be overcome by well organised cooperation between large and small computers in information work. The use of dBase is feasible as a data bank system for small computers and is described, with examples, in control of the stock of information requirements and the literature retrieval system.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Reflects on the situation a few years ago in the field of subject access in libraries and evaluates the present situation in the light of recent developments. Discusses factors which characterise the situation in West Germany today. Examines the organisation of cooperative subject access during the course of which various relationships are explored, and the dovetailing of the network and local library operations, and the formation of local and on-line catalogues are discussed. Describes the relationship between formal and subject access; discusses cooperation in the allocation of catchwords, and cooperation in classified subject access; and addresses 2 forms of cooperative subject access

    Abstract
In 1987 the Austrian National Library and the University Libraries began to implement the Online Library Network System BIBOS which will offer also an on-line public access catalogue (OPAC). After discussing the basic design of the forthcoming OPAC, requirements of its features (access, search functions, output, interface to circulation control) are formulated.

    Abstract
Lecture given at the meeting of the committee on interloans and union catalogues at the 20th Austrian Librarian's Conference. The contents of the Österreichischen Zeitschriftendatenbank (ÖZDB) will be transferred into the data base of the Austrian Libraries' Cooperative, which uses the BIBOS system. Framework conditions of procedures have been established. The 3 data files of ÖZDB are linked logically and are redundance free; they contained over 660.000 entries in 1986. In 1988 there were 980 participants in the data base, mainly Austrian academic libraries. On-line services are included. Interim measures have been recommended for the transition period.

    Abstract
Describes the result of seminars on the software package, Allegro, on 27-28 Oct and 3-4 Nov 88, organised by Brunswick Technical University Library and the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, in order to provide an opportunity for exchanging experiences on different Allegro applications, as well as information on current developments of Allegro and its prospects. Examines a series of case histories, including the use of Allegro in small libraries for cataloguing and the production of card catalogues, the creation of lists of new titles and subject catalogues for circulation, the cataloguing of periodicals with data in MARC format on CD-ROM, the use of Allegro in both MS-DOS and UNIX environment, and improvements in response times, as well as the introduction of window technology.

    Abstract
Although it was decided more than a year ago to adopt BIBOS Catloguing System for use in Austrian academic libraries, the Working Group on Cataloguing has been voicing doubts as its use begins. Lists these doubts. Deals in detail wih the problem of the hierarchical structure of BIBOS into which records of multi-volume works have to be fitted. In Sept 88 the computer company (EDV GmbH) itself came forward with a technical improvement which would allow the build up of records from the smaller fields, instead of imposing the shape of records from the ultimate data set, which had on occasion even led to contravention of the nominative cataloguing rules, RAK-WB. Cataloguing in the interim period will be complex. The working group has still made no final decision.

    Abstract
This article contains a discussion of the bibliographical databases of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. Along with the national bibliographies are included catalogs, union catalogs and centralized services insofar as they have national significance for each country. German-language book production is reported on in many bibliographical databases, at the moment predominantly in printed form. However, an increasing readiness for the production and use of databases in electronic form is noticeable. It is to be wished that the necessity of better and more economical use of bibliographical resources will lead to increasing coordination and cooperation in the German-speaking countries.

    Abstract
On 23 June 88 Gütersloh City Library hosted an in-service training session on BASIS (Library Analytical System for Information Storage) programs for acquisitioning and cataloguing as well as on Gütersloh's own integrated book issue system called AVALON, organised through the Scool for Library & Documentation at Cologne Polytechnic. Discusses the programs installed at Gütersloh for BASIS in the early 70s by the North Rhine Westphalia Automation Working Group along with computer personnel and librarians, as well as link-up possibilities with main frame computers issuing book overdues, time and staff implications, the development of AVALON wich, though integrated into BASIS, can still be installed without BASIS, and a glimpse at possible library applications and the requirements of hardware and software linked with this.

    Abstract
Scientific documents are more or less important in relation to give subjects and this importance can be measured. An empirical investigation into philosophical information was carried out using a weighting algorithm developed by N. Henrichs which results in a distribution by weighting of documents on an average philosophical subject. With the aid of statistical methods a threshold value can be obtained that separates the important and unimportant documents on a subject. The knowledge of theis threshold value is important for various practical and theoretic questions: providing new possibilities for research strategy in information retrieval; evaluation of the 'titleworthiness' of subjects by comparison of document titles and themes for which the document at hand is important; and making available data on thematic trends for scientific results

    Abstract
Identifies the value of interlibrary cooperation and the extent to which Conspectus can be of service to it, briefly outlining the origins of Conspectus in the 1980s in the USA under the Research Libraries Group and later the Association of Research Libraries. Describes Conspectus as a subject hierarchical grouping of library book collections, arranged in levels as: 25 divisions, 250 categories and 5.500 subjects. Hierarchical notation follows the LC classmark pattern. Explains the use of a numeric coding on a scale of 0-5 to indicate the level of coverage in any required subject for libraries participating in Conspectus, as well as coding to indicate the language in which the required material is written

    Abstract
The basic problem in freetext retrieval is that the retrieval language is not properly adapted to that of the author. Morphological segmentation, where words with the same root are grouped together in the inverted file, is a good eliminator of noise and information loss, providing high recall but low precision

    Abstract
In 1988 a pilot project was carried out in Baden Würtemberg to make people more familiar with the new technology. In Böblingen public library readers could reserve for an hour a room containing a television screen and laser printer, to help them to learn about construction and use of media. Similar facilities were available in Friedrichshafen and Heidelberg. There was no restriction on target groups. User training is important; the main problem is software selection. Textual aids were provided. The more advanced readers can do programming exercises in a special programming language.

    Abstract
Examines a simpler cataloguing format offered by PCs, without disturbing compatibility, using A-Z cataloguing rules for data input, category codes for tagging and computer-supported data input through windows. Gives numerous examples of catalogue entries, basing techniques on certain category schemes set out by Klaus Haller and Hans Popst. Examines catalogue entries in respect of categories of data bases for authors and corporate names, titles, single volume works, serial issues of collected works, and limited editions of works in several volumes.
